Why are you running for GISD School Board Trustee?
Because I care! I am passionate about education and providing people, specifically students, with the information, tools and tactics that will allow them to thrive in life. I want to share my life changing experiences and information with as many people as possible.
Education should teach our children HOW to think, not so much WHAT to think. We need a paradigm shift in US education regarding how we create school systems and districts. These entities can then produce critical thinking, fully functional graduates that can enter our global society and make a contribution regardless of what they desire to pursue: entrepreneurialism, vocational careers, college or military readiness.
As a former classroom teacher at Rowlett High School, an educational consultant for neighboring districts like Plano and Dallas Independent School Districts, and as a volunteer in the GISD who has served on several committees like Districtwide Educational Improvement Committee and African American Advisory Committee. I have had the privilege to address thousands of students here in North Texas. As a community organizer, I have worked with the City of Garland’s Office of Neighborhood Vitality to produced personal development workshops at the Annual Community Engagement Summit. I have also produced multiple Student Success Workshops at the Gail Field Center.
I believe education should support the personal development journey of our children, and help them to discover and manifest their purpose and passion in life. Currently there is too much emphasis on standardized testing and college/university preparation. This philosophy is outdated and leaving a large number of our children drowning in debt and unprepared for the rigors of life. I will advocate for a holistic approach to education that also vigorously promotes (FCS) Family Consumer Sciences.
As a responsible taxpayer in Dallas county for the last 20 years, I am acutely aware and sensitive to the usage and expenditures of GISD taxpayer dollars. As a entrepreneur and business development consultant in New York City, I have managed multi-million dollar budgets and assets;; I will bring that knowledge and experience with me to the GISD Board. I will support and advocate for measures and actions that ensure our dollars are used to equitably benefit all students, staff and the communities we serve.
